I finally try a lab that I found and purposed on my own. It was not a crazy lab like making a lava lamp, but still a big step. The lab required: Orange(s), olive oil(full), lighter(of some kind) and a knife. For the first step was to cut into the orange in the middle along the side, but only throw the skin. Then I had to carefully carve out the orange fruit to make sure leave the stem in tacked. Then I cut a hole on the top half of the orange peal to make a shield to protect the flame. Then I pored the olive oil into the orange peel and made sure to cover the stem(wick). I have forgotten to let it sit for 2-3 minutes, so when I went to light it, it didn't burn too well, also I poured to much olive oil into the candle so there was little to start with. Even so, I manged to get it lit for about 30 seconds which made it all worth it. I also did a bunch of research to understand the lab. The first thing I researched was how candles worked. The wax is to fuel the flame, the wick is where the flame will be, then the combination of the wax and the flame burns and steam and burned carbon comes out which makes the black spots from candles. I wasn't sure at first how much I would learn but I really enjoyed learning how candles worked. I felt proud when I saw the flame on my orange stem. Then I found the definition of combustion which is when compound and an oxidant which means that there needs to be a full, some form of O(oxygen) and some form of an energy start. Hey Halloween is coming up soon, maybe I can use this to make fake little jack-o-lanterns! I know next time that I need to let it sit for a few minutes so that the flame will stay lit. I'm also curious to try this experiment with other fruit to see if it will work.
