There are many component when making a rocket motor, but since we are making motors for small, model rockets. some of the components are divided with still a good amount of design freedom. The part that we can’t control are the container which we are using quarter inch thick cardboard tubes and the rocket casing is made with a kitty litter mix. The parts we be controlling are the fuel which is either sugar potassium nitrate(KNO3) or black powder and If we want to use a end burner or a core burner. We ourselves are not making the rockets motors, but rather designing them to be made by are teacher. This is some background research to make sure that we know that mean what and how it may react.
Rocket motor fuels:
The two rocket fuels(made by are teacher) we are allowed to use are black powder and sugar potassium nitrate. Let’s start with the black powder. Black powder is made with three ingredients. Coal and sulfur with act as a fuel, and potassium nitrate or also known as salt pepper. It has a very fast burn rate with gives it tons of power in short time. Making it the most powerful of the two we are using. Then there is sugar potassium nitrate(KNO3). Usually this burns really fast but the sugar helps slow down the reaction process. So it’s a slower less powerful burn but a longer burn.
Core burner V.S. End burner:
We won't be making any crazy motors that look like triangles, but by changing the nozzle(The hole at the bottom to let the the trust out.) the fuel may act differently. In the part above The fuel we are using are black powder and KNO3. Now the nozzle will change the full even more. A end burner nozzle is just a hole that only goes as far as the capping which basically it starts from the bottom of to fuel to the top in an all out go. Is is a more common burner and it is very powerful and slow. A core burner is where there a core in the middle instead of just the capping. This give it a more even all around instead of an end burner, but this will make it burn faster. We were given to options for quarter core(¼,½,¾,full). and five different drill bit sizes to get all kinds of affects. hopefully none of them will Cato(explode)!
